Why I Don’t Use AI in My Design Business

So… I don’t use AI in my brand design business.

No, not even ChatGPT.

Don’t get me wrong, I know there are many benefits to artificial intelligence in society.  (I guess…?).

But in the creative world? Absolutely miss me with that nonsense. We are so much better than that. Humans are creative, resourceful, and so much more able to think outside the box than a computer. If it were me, I would much rather have a human help me than a computer.

If you’ve been around for any length of time, you’ll know that I have always been a scenic-route type of person.

Taking the long way around.

Doing it for the process.

Call me a rule follower, but I like to do things thoroughly instead of half-baked or short-cut.

Part of this comes from my background as a maker. All throughout my life I’ve worked on any number of time-consuming creative projects, whether that’s making a fancy meal from scratch, knitting a sweater, or weaving. When I sit down at my loom, I’m committing to a process that doesn’t allow for shortcuts or efficiency tricks. I’m opening myself up to an ancient creative practice that takes concentration, time, and no small amount of learned skill. (And I’m still learning!).

I just believe in the value of from-scratch. Whether that’s baking a sandwich loaf every Sunday for lunches, canning wild grapes for the winter, or mending my clothes – I simply don’t believe in quick, easy fixes or convenience food.

So if I don’t believe in taking the easy way out in my day-to-day life, then why would I do that with my brand design services?

Every single brand I create is designed from scratch.

No prompts. No AI-generation. No quick-fixes. I will never plug your keywords into ChatGPT and ask it to make me a logo. I much prefer getting out my sketchbook and drawing your logos from scratch, before turning to digital design to complete the brand. I love getting out my actual camera and taking photos that I’d be proud to display in a magazine, to help inspire you. I will always, always, always take the slow road.
